Why Can't I Copy Text from a PDF?

Find out why PDF text cannot be selected or copied and how OCR can help with scanned documents.

Overview

You may not be able to copy text because the PDF is a scanned image, the document has restrictions, or it does not contain a proper text layer. OCR can help make many scanned PDFs searchable and selectable.

Why this matters

Searchable text helps you find information, copy notes, and use scanned documents more efficiently.

Scanned PDFs usually contain images, not text

When paper is scanned, each page is often stored as an image. It may look like text to you, but the computer only sees pixels. This is why selecting or copying words may not work.

OCR means Optical Character Recognition. It analyses page images and adds a text layer so supported PDF readers can search or select recognised words.

OCR has limits

OCR works best with clear, upright scans and readable printed text. Handwriting, shadows, blurred photos, unusual fonts, tables, and low-resolution scans can cause mistakes.

Always review important names, amounts, dates, and official numbers after OCR. Do not assume that every word was recognised perfectly.

Use OCR PDF

Useful tips

  • Use clear, well-lit scans for better results.
  • Review OCR text before using it for official work.
  • Only process documents you own or are authorised to use.

Important note

Always review downloaded documents before submitting, printing, signing, or sharing important files. Complex formatting, scanned pages, images, fonts, or document protection can affect processing results.
