Why Won't My PDF Open? Common Causes and Fixes

Troubleshoot a PDF that will not open on your phone, computer, Chrome, or PDF reader.

Published by PDFClanUpdated August 11, 2026

Overview

A PDF may not open because the download was incomplete, the file is damaged, the device has no compatible reader, the document needs a password, or the original file was created incorrectly.

Why this matters

Checking the likely cause first can help you solve the problem quickly and avoid sending a broken file to someone else.

Check the file download

An incomplete download is one of the most common reasons a PDF does not open. If a file shows 0 KB, appears unusually small, or was interrupted while downloading, download it again using a stable connection.

On mobile, make sure there is enough free storage. A lack of storage can cause a download to fail even when the browser appears to complete it.

Try another reader or device

A PDF may fail in one app but open in another. Try Chrome, a trusted PDF reader, or another device. Updating the PDF reader or browser can also solve compatibility issues.

If the document opens elsewhere, the first device or app may be the problem rather than the PDF file itself.

Check passwords and corruption

Some documents require a password before they can be opened. Ask the file owner for the correct password and only unlock files you own or are authorised to access.

If the file fails everywhere after downloading again, ask the sender for a new copy or recreate the PDF from the source document.

Useful tips

  • Keep original source documents before conversion.
  • Do not rename a non-PDF file to .pdf expecting it to work.
  • Be careful with suspicious PDF attachments.

Important note

Always review downloaded documents before submitting, printing, signing, or sharing important files. Complex formatting, scanned pages, images, fonts, or document protection can affect processing results.
